FAQs
I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.
How long will treatment take?
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
When will I know how much I have to pay?
Our Intake Department checks your insurance benefits once your profile has been created. You will be notified of any out-of-pocket costs before you schedule an appointment.
How soon will I get scheduled after my first phone call?
This really depends on you! Some clients complete the required forms the same day, while others take longer. As soon as we receive the completed forms that are outlined above, our team will call you to begin offering appointments! We have appointments anywhere from 9:00 AM-7:00 PM, Monday through Saturday, for sessions held in person at our Redlands or Riverside office, as well as virtually though our secure telehealth platform. Each of our therapists has a different schedule, and all appointments are first come, first serve. The majority of our availability for intake appointments tends to be mid-morning to early afternoon, but we will offer you all that are available to you.
Do you only offer Online Therapy?
We offer In-Person and Online therapy, and we love both! Our Redlands office is located at: 2068 Orange Tree lane, Suite 216, Redlands CA, 92374 and our Riverside Office is located at 11870 Pierce Street, Suite 150, Riverside CA 92508. Telehealth or online sessions can be attended through your computer, tablet or smartphone in any private location that works for you.
If my child is becoming a client, can I (the parent) meet the therapist?
Absolutely! For all clients 11 and younger, the first session is just for the parent(s) and therapist only. For new clients who are 12-17 years old, parents are welcome to meet with the therapist for the first 15 minutes of the session, but the remainder of the session will be with your child alone. As treatment continues, parent check ins are scheduled as needed, and parents are kept informed of their child’s progress.
How does scheduling work after my Intake appointment?
Once you complete your intake appointment (your first appointment), you are considered a current client. As a current client you gain access to the self-scheduling feature in the Simple Practice portal where you can request appointments with your therapist up to 4 weeks out! Since all appointments are first come, first serve, this feature allows you to pick the dates and times that work best for you directly from your therapist’s calendar. Our Client care Department is available by phone 909-557-6574 option #1 or by email support@s2afamily.com to help with scheduling as well. You may stop by our reception desk at any time to schedule future sessions too; our team is glad to help.
What can I expect from therapy?
It’s normal to be nervous about your first therapy session. You should expect a therapeutic environment that is warm, compassionate, empathetic, and safe. Your therapist’s role is to offer you insights into your experiences, new perspective on how to handle issues, and evidence-based treatment interventions that are customized to you and your needs. Your therapist will support you in deciding goals for your treatment, and will seek your feedback on your experience in therapy as you go along. You are the expert in you and your life.
